(Using Maya, recreating our favorite
game stages and/or maps! Or making
something 'new' out of the aesthetic.)

BELOW. Food for thought.

This will be our interpretive task that will serve as the bulk of our final stretch to the end in Critical Play (in-addition to touching up game stages and doing a little cardboard construction).

OBJECTIVE : While learning the intricate processes of 3D, adapt an overworld map or game level from any video game you desire or is of personal relevance, and recreate it in 3D digital space using Maya. There is method to the madness of why I asked you 'what your favorite game is' at our first meeting. Though it doesn't have to be that game. It can be a game map/level design that A.) is relevant to your aesthetic proficiency or tastes or B.) something you can take further even and add a little more 'content' too beyond direct formal exercise. The challenge and how you interpret your model is completely up to you.

TURN IN : For the critique on the 29th, please bring-
*The Maya file your project is in so we can look at it in 3D. And place in a folder.
*TWO 1280x720px images to accompany your turn in, so they may quickly be printed for the Critical Play exhibition. And so we may look at as well. We will go over image export in a later tutorial.
*OPTIONAL : See if you are able to successfully upload your model to SKETCHFAB.COM with all materials properly in place and no distortion. It will be visually nice to view and to share amongst your own friends and crowd.

To test everything out, and for fun,
I did a quick one of my own. Based
on some of my favorite level design
from the game Super Meat Boy.
I just screen captured a Twitch.tv
stream to get the specific shot.

Simple altered details are no
huge deal. As long as the core
similarity is in tact and it looks
good with effort put into it.

Once more: it is more of a formal
exercise. A huge underlying 'concept'
is optional, if you are up to the task.

As always, I either place a .PDF
for assistance or do a live demo.
For the task of 3D modeling, I am
taking two weeks worth of doing both.

Below are the images (which I will
pass out live) for the first week of
run throughs with Maya 3D.

I ask that you come prepared to work and do work in the ample time you have available until the critique.

Beyond everything else: have fun!

Link to Sign Up for License to Get/Use Maya (Free)

http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/maya

To get on your own machine and/or use on our lab computers. We will be dealing with Maya in the coming weeks with our fun project 4.

Revamped Syllabus Schedule (Remaining Semester)

Critical Play . 2014
Revamped schedule (from original syllabus)
for the remainder of the spring semester.

Week 9. Mar 25. "Progression"
-Critique our game stages, 70-80% (100%?) done. Will likely spend all to almost all of class doing this.
-We will all apply for a license to get Maya. Free! So we may use it in the coming weeks.

Week 10. Apr 1 . "The Next Dimension"
-Introduce Project 4 : The Overworld Model (3D).
-Demo Maya 3D modeling software in a step by step workshop for all to understand.
-DEMO DAY STEP 1 : The form. Learn to sculpt objects in Maya first. No color or texture yet.
-Exercise: Contribute to the 'Mapstalgia' site. Draw a game level from memory.

Week 11. Apr 8 . "Skeuomorphism"
-Begin to discuss the details of our class 'final' exhibition. Promotional materials. Collab. More.
-Continue with Maya 3D modeling demo, same step by step workshop as before to understand.
-DEMO DAY STEP2 : Texturing, color, image capturing, and export (.dae or still image).
-Exercise: With cubes and images, in groups, be able to assemble Super Mario Bros. World 1-1.
-Potentially begin to build 'artifacts' out of cardboard to fill the space of our final class exhibition.

Week 12. Apr 15 . "The Artcade"
-This is the date we will now (instead of last semester) make a field trip to the Artcade!
-5030 Las Brisas Blvd, Reno, Nevada 89523
-We will plan with who is driving who, before hand. Where to park before. It is just 5-7 minutes away.
-Get a tour and history by owner of the place, and of games.
-The visual of arcades will be 'very' relevant to us now and later.

Week 13. Apr 22. "Glitch Day"
-Instructor will be at NYC for Games for Change Festival. Unavailable in physical form.
-As originally planned for another day, we will work this day and get valuable in-process help.
-Consider this time as valuable to use so you may work.

Week 14. Apr 29. "Endgame"
-CRITIQUE UPDATES OF PROJECT 3 (Serious Game).
-CRITIQUE PROJECT 4 (Overworld Model).
-Spend any remaining time together in class together building for final class exhibition(?).
-Pray for instructor, as his thesis reception/show is opening this week.

Week 15. May 6. "Victory Fanfare"
-PREPARE. For wherever our final class exhibition will take place at (be it on campus or downtown).
-Get ready any projectors/computers/cardboard sculptures/etc. for the space. I will rent a truck.

TBD Time. The Exhibition of Critical Play
-Does not have to be the evening of May 6. Can be later that week. But preferably that week.

NOTES
*PROJECT 5 HAS BEEN FUSED WITH (FINAL EXHIBITION) GRADE DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINT. AND ASSETS AVAILABLE (LAB TECH). THIS IS IN YOUR FAVOR.
*ALL PROJECT 3 AND 4s IN FINAL FORM DUE APRIL 29. NO UPDATING BEYOND THIS POINT.

Walk Cycle Animations (Digital or Hand Drawn)

I'm gonna put a step by step tutorial out for this as well, starting with digital methodology and then hand drawn. If choosing hand drawn, know that the exact points of each of the 8 frames of the cycle I'm going over are referenced in deeper detail during the digital walk through.

If you scroll down the page fast enough, the tutorial looks like a zootrope/ phenakistoscope. Anyway, nerd jargon. Look below.

Now for hand drawn.

For reference, I have taught hand drawn animation in certain workshops for middle schoolers throughout Northern Nevada in my practice. Also, elementary students. The below video is a neat, stop motion / hand drawn animated leader I made for it.
